Oklahoma drivers are getting mailed notices that look like police tickets for uninsured vehicles, but police say they aren’t from Oklahoma City. The notices include a picture of a driver’s car, leading to confusion about the tickets.
Uninsured Vehicle Diversion Program
The state’s Uninsured Vehicle Diversion Program uses artificial license plate readers to identify uninsured vehicles. If a vehicle is found to be uninsured, a notice is sent to the vehicle owner. The program gives vehicle owners an opportunity to avoid prosecution and court by taking action.
A representative for the program said they do not keep or share a person’s information after taking the picture. Noble McIntyre, an attorney in Oklahoma, warned that ignoring the notice could lead to prosecution and a real ticket.
