An Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation staff attorney, Shannon Desherow, is under review after a viral video surfaced of her declaring she would refuse to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and urging Americans to make agents’ lives ‘miserable’.
Background
Desherow, who works as assistant general counsel for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, made the comments in a TikTok video that was reshared by Libs of TikTok. In the video, she stated that ICE has no authority and no jurisdiction over U.S. citizens, and therefore, she would not comply with an order given to her at gunpoint by somebody who has no authority to make that order.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security responded to Desherow’s comments, stating that obstruction of law enforcement is a federal crime and a felony. The spokesperson also noted that ICE officers are facing a nearly 1000% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, and gang members.
Response from Oklahoma Officials
The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office suggested that Desherow should resign, stating that her comments do not reflect the values of Oklahomans or the views of law enforcement professionals who work with federal partners to keep communities safe.
