Oklahoma Sooners Eye College World Series After Game Suspension

The University of Oklahoma baseball team is on the brink of reaching the Men’s College World Series, with their weather-suspended game against Kansas set to resume on Monday in Lawrence. The Sooners, leading 8-1 in the bottom of the third inning, will continue their Super Regional matchup against the No. 15-seed Jayhawks at noon at Hoglund Ballpark.

Game Progress and Weather Delays

The series, which began on Sunday evening, was halted due to rain and lightning. Prior to the suspension, the Sooners had already secured an 8-1 victory in Game 1 on Saturday, bringing them within one win of their first trip to Omaha since 2022, when they reached the championship series.

In the early stages of Game 2, Oklahoma took an initial lead with a run in the first inning. Although Kansas tied the game in the second inning, the Sooners responded with a six-run surge in the bottom of the second, sending 12 batters to the plate. First baseman Dayton Tockey added to the lead with a 402-foot home run in the third inning, marking his sixth homer in the last nine games.

Looking Ahead

Freshman pitcher Xander Mercurius made a strong start for the Sooners, striking out five batters over three innings before the game was paused. When play resumes, OU second baseman Kyle Branch will be at bat with a 3-1 count, no runners on base, and no outs.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN2, and if Kansas manages a comeback victory, a decisive Game 3 will be played later on Monday to determine which team advances to the Men’s College World Series.
