Oklahoma Resident Arrested at Sunshine Key Resort for Possessing Protected Queen Conch

Monroe County, Fla. – On Thursday evening, marine deputy Luis Guiardinu stopped a man at the Sunshine Key Resort in the Florida Keys after spotting six queen conch in the visitor’s belongings. The deputy, conducting a routine patrol, identified the mollusks as protected wildlife and placed the individual in custody.

Arrest Details

The man, identified as Vu Xuan Dinh, 48, of Oklahoma City, was taken into custody at approximately 5:47 p.m. on August 20. Deputies escorted Dinh to the Monroe County jail, where he remains pending further legal action.

Florida’s Marine Conservation Laws

Florida law strictly prohibits the harvesting, possession, or transport of queen conch (Aliger gigas) in state waters. The species has experienced significant population declines, prompting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to enforce stringent protections. Violations can result in criminal charges, fines, and possible imprisonment.

According to the FWC, the queen conch is a keystone species for coral reef ecosystems. Over‑harvesting threatens not only the animal itself but also the broader marine environment that depends on healthy reef structures.

Public Guidance

Authorities encourage residents and visitors to familiarize themselves with state marine regulations before engaging in any fishing or collecting activities. Detailed information on protected species, permissible harvest limits, and licensing requirements is available on the FWC website at www.myfwc.com.

Deputy Guiardinu emphasized that the enforcement action was routine and intended to protect the fragile marine ecosystem that draws tourists to the Keys each year. “Our goal is to preserve these resources for future generations,” he said.

Legal Process

Dinh will appear before a Monroe County judge to address the charges. If convicted, he could face penalties consistent with Florida statutes governing the illegal possession of protected wildlife. The case underscores the importance of adhering to state conservation rules, especially for out‑of‑state visitors who may be unfamiliar with local regulations.

Community Impact

The incident serves as a reminder to the tourism industry and local businesses that environmental stewardship is integral to the region’s economic health. The Florida Keys rely heavily on eco‑tourism, and protecting marine life is essential to maintaining the area’s reputation as a premier destination for fishing, diving, and wildlife observation.

Local conservation groups have praised the swift action taken by Monroe County deputies, noting that consistent enforcement helps deter illegal harvesting and supports ongoing restoration efforts.
