Oklahoma Nonprofit Empowers Women Through Career Training

In Oklahoma, the nonprofit organization From Ordinary to Extraordinary is making a significant impact by helping women rebuild their lives through free career training and a supportive environment. The nonprofit recently celebrated the graduation of 56 women who earned certifications in medical assisting, dental assisting, and phlebotomy. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience and overcoming personal challenges.

Empowering Women Through Education

Founded by Antoria Gillon, From Ordinary to Extraordinary provides career training to survivors of domestic abuse, pregnant mothers, and mothers with children under three years old. Gillon emphasizes the importance of not only teaching skilled trades but also offering a space where women can heal and thrive. “It’s very important that we not only teach a skilled trade, but we give them a space that they can thrive while still healing,” Gillon stated.

Among the graduates is Tabitha Hughes, who made the courageous decision to leave an abusive marriage, get sober, and regain custody of her children. “When facing prison time, I made the decision I didn’t want to continue that life, and I wanted to be the mom I’m supposed to be,” Hughes shared. Another graduate, Lashadrejuna Harris, had dreams of becoming a military nurse before becoming a young mother of two. She encourages others to believe in themselves, saying, “You have to believe in yourself because you can do anything you put your mind to.”

Looking to the Future

Since its inception in Oklahoma nearly two years ago, the nonprofit has graduated over 600 mothers. The organization plans to expand its offerings to include cosmetology, barbering, and additional medical trades. For the women graduating, this milestone represents more than just certifications; it’s an opportunity to build new lives. Hughes expressed this sentiment, stating, “No matter what you go through in life, you can overcome it and continue and do better than the day before.”

The success of From Ordinary to Extraordinary highlights the power of community support and education in transforming lives. As the nonprofit continues to grow, it remains committed to empowering women and fostering a brighter future for families in Oklahoma.
