Logan Palmer, a 10‑year inmate at the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center in McAlester, Oklahoma, was taken into custody in Rhode Island on Tuesday, ending a two‑month, multi‑state manhunt.

Escape and early leads

Palmer walked off the prison property on July 22, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC). The facility’s agricultural campus includes several hundred unfenced acres, allowing inmates a degree of freedom as part of a re‑entry program. “When we say he walked away, he literally walked off the prison property,” explained Kay Gallamore, chief of public relations for ODOC.

Three days after the escape, a surveillance camera captured Palmer at a gas station in Denison, Texas, but marshals were unable to apprehend him at that time.

Tip leads to Rhode Island

Authorities received a tip suggesting Palmer might be in Rhode Island. Gallamore said the tip prompted the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force in the area to investigate. “Through intelligence, we figured out he might be in Rhode Island, and then we contacted the Marshals Service Task Force in Rhode Island to check out a tip that we got,” she said.

Palmer was located in Rhode Island on Tuesday and is now in custody there. It remains unclear when he will be extradited back to Oklahoma.

Charges and future custody

Palmer was serving his sentence after pleading guilty in September 2025 to lewd acts with a child under age 16 in Caddo County. Following his recapture, ODOC announced he will face new charges and be transferred to a higher‑security facility. “He’ll go back behind a fence, medium security, and then we are going to submit charges,” Gallamore said.

ODOC noted that walk‑aways from the Jackie Brannon minimum‑security unit occur occasionally. The facility is designed to help inmates adjust to life after release, offering more freedom, job‑training programs, and other re‑entry services. “Minimum security is meant to be sort of like re‑entry. So, inmates get a little more freedom, a little more activities and programs, access to job types, things like that,” Gallamore explained.
