Oklahoma voters got a rare chance to hear directly from the two major candidates for governor on Thursday, as Republican Mike Mazzei and Democrat Cyndi Munson faced off in the state’s only scheduled debate before the Nov. 3 election.
Candidate priorities
Mazzei opened with a focus on affordability and job creation. “It’s always great when I get the chance to share with the people of Oklahoma my plan to make life more affordable and create more jobs for everyday Oklahomans,” he said. He emphasized a vision of strong employment, dignified retirement for seniors, and a statewide literacy program to get students reading at grade level and into skilled trades.
Munson, meanwhile, highlighted the need for investment in public education, protection of hospitals and a balanced state government. “I’m just hearing over and over again that they want a governor who’s going to invest in public education and protect our hospitals and, of course, bring better jobs to our state,” she told the audience.
Education as a central theme
Both candidates agreed that education is a cornerstone of Oklahoma’s future. Mazzei described his “statewide literacy program” aimed at getting students reading at grade level and expanding pathways into skilled trades. Munson warned that Oklahoma currently lags behind other states, noting, “We’re last in everything. We know that. And there has been one party that’s been in control, and so Oklahomans are seeing that we need more balance in state government.”
Campaign momentum
Each candidate pledged to keep the campaign moving forward with vigor. Mazzei highlighted the enthusiasm of Republican supporters, saying, “We’ve had some amazing community events, some of the largest crowds that I’ve been blessed to participate in. And the message is going to be, hey, remember to get out and vote.” Munson promised to stay on the road, meeting voters and discussing solutions to the challenges Oklahomans face.
Looking ahead
The debate marks the final public forum before voters head to the polls on Nov. 3. Both campaigns say they will continue to travel across the state, speaking at community events, churches and local businesses to share their visions for Oklahoma’s future.
As the election approaches, Oklahomans are encouraged to review each candidate’s platform, attend upcoming town halls and make an informed choice at the ballot box.
