The Oklahoma County Detention Center is facing significant challenges due to elevator outages, with only one of its three elevators operational. This has caused disruptions in transporting detainees, medical supplies, and food.
Elevator Repairs and Costs
The cost of repairs could be up to $3 million, and the jail’s outdated parts are no longer common, further complicating the repair process. Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan stated that the current situation highlights the facility’s inadequacies and the need for a new jail.
A parent of a detainee expressed concern for inmates with medical issues, as the medical floor is located at the top of the facility. The jail has two other elevators designated for attorneys and staff, but they are not large enough to accommodate gurneys in case of an emergency.
