The YWCA Oklahoma City emergency shelter, which provides refuge for abuse victims, faced a cooling system failure for the second time in two weeks, forcing 28 women and children to relocate overnight amid triple-digit temperatures.
Cooling System Failure
According to Kristie Chandler, president and CEO of YWCA Oklahoma City, the shelter has been relying on temporary fixes to address the cooling issues. Chandler stated, ‘We were really grateful for the Band-Aid fixes to help us get closer to being able to get the chiller replaced.’ The shelter anticipates installing a new chiller as soon as next week.
The cooling system is not the only issue the shelter is facing. Strong winds last Friday caused damage to the building, with part of it being torn off. The shelter’s insurance advised that if the repairs cost less than $10,000, they would need to cover the expenses themselves.
To prevent further heating issues, the shelter is relying on restaurants and chefs to provide meals for the families, avoiding the use of the kitchen, which could increase indoor temperatures. Donors and internal funds are providing relief to the shelter.
