Oklahoma City Public Schools is providing free developmental screenings to help students succeed in the classroom before the new school year begins. The screenings are not meant to label children but to identify areas where they may need support, such as reading or communication skills.

Organizers said the screenings assess students now to help set them up for a successful future. “We have an assessment tool that allows us to look at the five main developmental areas for children. It’s a quick way for us to make sure that a student is on track or if they need a referral for further help in the school. This helps us pinpoint where they need help in the classroom,” said Kyrie Coon, OKCPS early childhood special education program coordinator.
OKCPS said the most common diagnoses identified through these screenings are autism and Down syndrome. Since the program began, district leaders reported a 600% increase in connecting students to resources. Additional screenings will be held at Horace Mann Pre-K Center and Hawthorne Elementary.
