Wells Christmas Tree Farm in Norman, Oklahoma, is taking steps to ensure its trees thrive despite the challenges of triple-digit temperatures and drought conditions in Oklahoma.
Protecting the Trees
Jesse Wells, owner of Wells Christmas Tree Farm, explained that Oklahoma summers can be tough on their trees, especially the younger ones. “The younger trees are the ones that are going to suffer, and that’s just because their root systems haven’t developed enough to withstand the drought,” Wells said.
The farm uses drip lines on all of its trees to regulate water and watch the weather. They also use slow, moist soil to address the issues caused by Oklahoma’s red clay and sandy loam, helping to limit heat and drought stress on the trees.
In addition to their locally grown Virginia pines, Wells Christmas Tree Farm brings in thousands of trees from out of state, including firs from North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Oregon.
