The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving fake warrants. Scammers are calling people, claiming they have an active warrant for missing jury duty, failing to appear in court, or contempt of court. The scammers may already have the person’s name, address, and phone number, making the scam appear legitimate.
According to the sheriff’s office, scammers send fake documents that include the agency’s logo and direct victims to cryptocurrency kiosks. Victims are then told to send money using a QR code. The sheriff’s office said it will never call someone and ask for money to clear a warrant or accept cryptocurrency as payment.
Residents who receive such calls should hang up and contact the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office directly. Authorities are urging residents to share the warning with family members, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults.
