Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education Chair Paula Lewis announced her resignation, effective immediately. Lewis cited her family’s decision to relocate outside district boundaries as the reason for her departure, as per Oklahoma law, a board member must live within the district they represent.

Leadership and Legacy

Lewis was first elected to the Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education in 2016 and served as board chair since 2017. During her tenure, she guided schools through significant changes, including leadership transitions, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the implementation of Student Outcomes Focused Governance.

Lewis also played a key role in expanding investments in early childhood education, student wellness, and mental health, as well as the establishment of Oklahoma City Public Schools’ College and Career Centers and workforce development initiatives.

"Serving the students, families, and employees of Oklahoma City Public Schools has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Lewis said in a statement. "While this decision was not an easy one, it is the right one for my family as we begin a new chapter of life."

Oklahoma City Public Schools Vice Chair Lori Bowman will assume the board chair’s duties. The Board of Education will discuss the board leadership transition during an executive session at the August 17 meeting.
