The Oklahoma City Thunder stepped off the court and onto the community stage Thursday, joining local partners to host a Meals of Honor luncheon for the Oklahoma National Guard. About 250 Guard members gathered at the National Guard Museum for a warm meal and a chance to be recognized for their service.
“With the help of our great partners Cannon and Associates, we are feeding our National Guard personnel. They’re coming in. We got about 250 personnel that we’ve fed across the state,” said Jennifer Watson, who oversees community engagement for the Thunder. The team’s involvement underscores its commitment to honoring the men and women who protect Oklahoma every day.
One of the Guard’s own, Lieutenant Colonel John Cannon, who also serves as a judge advocate, expressed how meaningful the event was for families. “Service is something that we do with our family, with our kids, coworkers. Getting to come together to share these experiences was really special because whenever an airman or soldier is in service, it’s their entire family in that service as well,” he said.
The luncheon provided more than a meal; it offered a brief respite from the demanding schedules of Guard members and their families. Watson added, “Sometimes they’re not always acknowledged for what they do for the community, and I think this is a great way to give a little time out of their day to relax, celebrate with their fellow service persons.”
Community partnership and impact
The event was made possible through a partnership between the Thunder, Cannon & Associates, and the National Guard Museum. By bringing together a professional sports franchise and a local business, the luncheon highlighted how public‑private collaboration can support those who serve.
Local residents who attended noted the positive atmosphere and the pride they felt seeing the Thunder give back. The Thunder’s involvement aligns with its broader community‑outreach initiatives, which include youth programs, school visits, and charitable donations throughout the Oklahoma City metro area.
Looking ahead
Both the Thunder organization and the National Guard view the luncheon as a recurring opportunity to strengthen ties between the military and the community. Future Meals of Honor events are expected to continue, offering more service members and their families a chance to be honored and to enjoy a supportive environment.
By feeding and recognizing 250 Guard personnel, the Oklahoma City Thunder demonstrated that civic responsibility and teamwork extend far beyond basketball courts, reinforcing the city’s tradition of supporting families, faith, and liberty.
