Zoo Atlanta welcomes giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang to new panda grove

Atlanta residents received a special preview of the city’s newest attraction on Friday morning when Zoo Atlanta opened the Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove to a limited audience. The zoo’s two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, stepped onto the public stage after a routine quarantine in a biosecure area of the grove.

Meet the pandas

Ping Ping, a male born on March 17, 2020, is the older of the pair. His name, which translates to “smooth and healthy life,” reflects the zoo’s hopes for his well‑being. Fu Shuang, a female who turned six on October 18, carries a name derived from the Chinese phrase “fu lu,” meaning happiness. Both pandas were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China and arrived in Atlanta in September.

Zoo’s perspective

Raymond B. King, president and CEO of Zoo Atlanta, described Ping Ping as “a goofball” and noted that Fu Shuang has a quieter, more cautious personality. “He has a lot of personality,” King said. “She’s a little more reserved, probably a little more cautious in trying new things. But they’ve both adapted very, very well.” He added that the pandas have a unique ability to calm visitors: “They have just a very unique, remarkable way of bringing the world to a stop, so I think if you come in stressed with outside concerns, those just kind of drift away as soon as you start looking at those pandas.”

Conservation partnership

The pandas will remain in the United States temporarily under a giant‑panda conservation agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association. This loan follows the zoo’s earlier panda residents, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, who returned to China in 2024 with their cubs Ya Lun and Xi Lun. Today, three U.S. zoos host pandas on loan from China: Zoo Atlanta, the San Diego Zoo, and the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

Visitor information

The new panda grove is located on the zoo’s main campus and is open to the public during regular zoo hours. Families are encouraged to visit early in the day for the best viewing opportunities, as the pandas are most active in the morning. Educational signage throughout the exhibit explains the pandas’ natural habits, diet of bamboo, and the broader conservation efforts aimed at protecting the species in the wild.

Why it matters to Atlanta

Beyond the delight of seeing these charismatic animals, the pandas serve as ambassadors for wildlife conservation, drawing attention to the importance of preserving natural habitats both at home and abroad. Their presence also supports local tourism, bringing visitors from across the region to experience one of the nation’s premier zoo attractions.
