Oklahoma City metro school districts are addressing nearly 200 teacher vacancies, with special education and early education positions in high demand. Oklahoma City Public Schools accounts for 88 of the open positions, according to Brad Herzer, the district’s chief talent officer.

Staffing Challenges

Herzer said that the district is currently at about 96% staffing, which is typical for this time of year. However, special education remains a critical need across the OKC metro, even though pay for these positions is about 5% higher than general education roles.

OKCPS will host a hiring event this Friday at Britton Elementary from noon to 3 p.m. The school has eight openings, but opportunities will be available district-wide. Other districts in the OKC metro, such as Moore Public Schools, Edmond Public Schools, Mid-Del Schools, and Putnam City Schools, are also working to fill teacher vacancies.
