Ohio Sports Betting Grows

Sports betting popularity in Ohio continues to climb amid the World Cup and NBA Finals, with the industry now a multibillion-dollar market in the state.

Local Impact

It’s been over three years since sports betting became legal in Ohio, with Ohioans spending nearly $10 billion on sports bets in 2025. Local fans who partake in sports betting see it as a fun way to engage in big sporting events, with most betting no more than $10 at a time.

However, Derek Longmeier with the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio notes that the accessibility of sports betting can be a slippery slope for some. The organization has seen a 55% increase in calls to the Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline, as well as an increase in searches for gambling help on Google.

Longmeier emphasizes that the introduction of prediction market apps, available to those 18 and up, has led to younger people placing bets on sports. He warns that betting larger amounts, no longer for fun but to make money or win back losses, are big warning signs.

The Problem Gambling Network of Ohio is not against gambling or sports betting but aims to ensure that those engaging in it do so in moderation. Help is available to anyone struggling with problem gambling through the organization.
