Ohio mother of 16 children pleads not guilty to child endangerment charges

Vinton County, Ohio – Elizabeth Siders, 34, was arraigned Wednesday on multiple criminal counts stemming from the discovery of her 16 children living in squalid conditions. The mother entered not‑guilty pleas to 19 counts of child endangerment and to two separate charges of sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct involving a minor who was not one of her children.

Arraignment details

Siders, who was arrested on June 30 along with her husband, Gary Siders Jr., and her in‑laws Gary Sr. and Christina Siders, faced a $300,000 bond for the child endangerment charges and an additional $250,000 bond for the sexual battery case. The judge ordered her to have no contact with her children, the minor victim, or her husband, and she remained in jail after the hearing.

Charges and allegations

Prosecutors allege that the children, ages 1½ to 18, were found in a home littered with feces, with some unable to speak. The separate sexual battery indictment accuses Elizabeth and Gary Jr., 36, of abusing a minor aged 13 to 16 in 2022. The victim was described as being under Siders’ care “in loco parentis,” meaning she acted as a parental figure.

Defense arguments

Defense attorney Thomas Stolly argued that Siders may be a victim herself, noting she married at age 15 and has been pregnant for most of the past two decades without a full postpartum recovery. He raised concerns about the potential effects of repeated births and limited medical care on her mental health. Stolly previously requested a competency evaluation, which was granted last month; results are pending.

Family status and custody

All 16 children are currently in state custody while the legal process continues. Gary Siders Jr. pleaded not guilty on August 26 and remains jailed. Gary Siders Sr., 73, was recently found not competent to stand trial, a finding his attorney said was unsurprising given his declining mental health. Christina Siders, 68, also pleaded not guilty and awaits a bond hearing.

Ongoing investigations

The investigation began in December with a probe into sexual abuse involving two children, leading to the arrests of the South Bloomingville men. A later March investigation expanded to include the Siders family for possible unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. A grand jury issued indictments on August 21, charging the family members with multiple counts of child endangerment and the sexual battery offenses.

Resources for abuse victims

Authorities remind the public that anyone suspecting child abuse should contact the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 800‑422‑4453 or visit www.childhelphotline.org. In emergencies, call 911.
