Ohio Inflation‑Indexed Minimum Wage Rises to $11.40 in 2027

Starting Jan. 1, 2027 Ohio workers earning the state minimum wage will receive a 3.5% raise, bringing the hourly rate to $11.40. The increase follows the inflation‑adjusted formula mandated by a 2006 constitutional amendment approved by Ohio voters.

How the raise is calculated

The Ohio Department of Commerce uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI‑W) to determine the adjustment. Between Sept. 1, 2025, and Aug. 31, 2026, the index rose 3.5%, which directly translates into the new wage level.

Impact on workers

A full‑time employee earning the minimum wage will earn roughly $23,712 annually in 2027. While the raise lifts earnings above the current state minimum of $11 per hour, analysts note that the amount remains below the 2026 federal poverty level for a family of three by about $3,600. The gap could widen once the 2027 federal poverty level is released.

Heather Smith, a work‑and‑wages researcher with Policy Matters Ohio, a progressive think tank, said the increase is “good that the lowest paid workers are getting a raise,” but cautioned that it “does little to boost their standard of living.” She added that the minimum wage is insufficient to cover rent, utilities, health care and other necessities for a single adult, let alone a family.

Living‑wage comparisons

According to the MIT living‑wage calculator, a single person in Akron would need $21.03 per hour to meet basic needs, while Cleveland’s fair‑wage standard sits at $16.26 per hour for city employees and contractors. Both cities illustrate the gap between the statutory minimum and a true living wage.

Tip wage and employer responsibilities

Ohio’s tipped wage will also rise 3.5% to $5.70 per hour in 2027. Employers must ensure that tipped workers receive at least $11.40 per hour after tips; if tips fall short, the employer must make up the difference.

Why Ohio’s approach matters

Ohio’s inflation‑linked minimum wage contrasts sharply with the federal floor, which has remained at $7.25 per hour since 2009 because it is not indexed to price changes. By automatically adjusting each January, Ohio helps low‑wage workers keep pace with rising costs, even if the adjustment does not fully close the poverty gap.

Supporters of a $15 statewide minimum wage failed to gather enough signatures for a 2024 ballot initiative, leaving the inflation‑adjusted system as the primary mechanism for wage growth in the Buckeye State.
