Ohio Celebrates History and Nature with Paddling Event on Maumee River

In celebration of America 250, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is hosting a series of events throughout June under the theme “Ohio Outdoors.” These events aim to highlight Ohio’s rich history and natural beauty, with a particular focus on the state’s parks, rivers, and trails.

Local Highlight: Escape to Freedom Canoe Paddle

One of the key events in northwest Ohio is the Escape to Freedom Canoe Paddle, taking place on June 19. This event is designed to coincide with Juneteenth and offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the Maumee River while learning about the history of the Underground Railroad. The canoe trip will be guided by a naturalist who will point out significant landmarks and features along the route.

The tour will commence at 6:30 p.m. from the Orleans Park Boat Launch in Perrysburg. It is open to all ages, though registration is required to participate. This event not only provides a chance for recreation but also serves as an educational experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for Ohio’s natural and historical resources.

Statewide Engagement

Beyond the Maumee River event, the America 250-Ohio initiative includes several other activities across the state, all aimed at encouraging residents and visitors to engage with Ohio’s natural landscapes and historical sites. These events are part of a broader effort to promote conservation and ensure that these valuable resources are preserved for future generations.

According to Todd Kleismit, executive director of America 250-Ohio, “Ohio’s natural resources are one of our greatest assets, offering opportunities for recreation, education, conservation, and connection in every corner of the state.” This initiative underscores the importance of protecting Ohio’s natural beauty while celebrating its historical significance.
