The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced a major upgrade to Highway 70 near Lake Texoma. The two‑lane stretch will be widened to four lanes and the roadbed will be raised to address historic flooding and erosion problems. The improvements tie directly into the newly completed two‑mile Roosevelt Bridge, which already provides a four‑lane crossing.
Why the project matters
Local motorists have long complained that the narrow two‑lane segment was a safety hazard. “Safer. I mean, the two lanes was really constricted, narrow, and hearing about the previous wrecks and stuff and other trucks going over the bridge makes it scary,” said Tamara Norris, a regular driver on the route. Norris added that the added lanes will give her confidence to travel the road more often.
Safety concerns addressed
ODOT District Engineer Anthony Echelle explained that the narrow stretch has been the site of severe head‑on collisions in the past. “This narrow stretch, we’ve historically had some pretty severe head‑on collisions, and those are just horrible… the additional lanes and the width between the lanes, a little more breathing room between directions of travel,” he said.
Construction details
The project will extend eastward to Willow Springs and the Johnson Creek intersection, linking directly with the four‑lane Roosevelt Bridge. While crews work, traffic will remain free‑flowing, though drivers may be shifted to one side of the road at times. “The project’s going to be built with traffic free flowing. Now that doesn’t mean that there won’t be times where traffic is shifted to one side or the other. While crews work on one side, they may be shifted over to the other side,” Echelle noted.
In addition to widening, ODOT plans to raise the roadway to mitigate past flooding and erosion. Crews will clear timber along the roadside to create a wider footprint, allowing the road to be lifted and broadened. “So that we can raise the road up and make it wider,” Echelle said.
Community response
Local residents expressed relief at the news. Norris summed up the sentiment: “I may go over a time or two more,” she said, indicating she feels safer and more willing to use the route now that the improvements are underway.
Project timeline
ODOT expects construction to proceed without major disruptions to daily travel, though occasional lane shifts are anticipated. The agency has not released a specific completion date, but the work is slated to continue through the coming months, with the goal of delivering a safer, more reliable corridor for commuters, commercial traffic, and tourists traveling the Lake Texoma area.
When finished, the widened Highway 70 will provide a four‑lane thoroughfare that matches the capacity of the new Roosevelt Bridge, reducing congestion, improving safety, and supporting economic activity in the region.
