Ocean Photographer of the Year 2026 honors striking seahorse portrait

French Polynesia – A tender moment beneath the waves has earned the top honor in the 2026 Ocean Photographer of the Year competition. Julien Anton, a hobbyist photographer who spent countless hours in challenging conditions, captured an adult seahorse and two newly‑born juveniles turning back toward their father before swimming away. The striking portrait was named the overall winner on Wednesday, beating out category winners ranging from dolphins surfing in Sydney to a rescued pilot whale in Cape Verde.

Why the image resonated

Anton said the photograph represents more than a rare wildlife sight; it serves as a bridge between science, conservation and the public. “When the juveniles turned back towards the adult, it felt like something far beyond what I had dared to hope for,” he explained. The image, he hopes, will prompt reflection on the fragile state of our oceans and inspire action to protect them.

Recognition from the award organizers

Will Harrison, founder and director of the Ocean Photographer of the Year awards, praised Anton’s work as “ocean photography at its most powerful: intimate, urgent and impossible to ignore.” The competition, co‑presented by Oceanographic and Blancpain, received thousands of entries from photographers worldwide, with category winners showcasing diverse marine scenes such as green turtles, wave‑riding dolphins and a stranded pilot whale.

Local gratitude

Anton thanked the communities of Tahiti and Moorea for their knowledge and support, noting that local insight was essential to locating the elusive seahorses. He emphasized that the photograph’s impact extends beyond artistic merit, aiming to raise awareness of marine ecosystems that many people never see.

What’s next for marine photography

The award’s gallery, now available online, offers a visual tour of the year’s best marine images. Organizers hope the collection will encourage both seasoned photographers and newcomers to document the ocean’s wonders, reinforcing the link between visual storytelling and environmental stewardship.

As the competition highlights the urgent need for ocean conservation, Anton’s seahorse portrait stands as a reminder that even the smallest creatures can inspire a global conversation about protecting our planet’s most vital resource.
