NYPD seeks suspects after motor oil and feces vandalize two Queens synagogues

The New York Police Department is actively searching for two suspects who were recorded throwing a mixture of motor oil and feces at two Jewish houses of worship in Queens last month. The first incident occurred on July 16 outside Young Israel of Jamaica Estates on 188th Street. Surveillance footage shows the duo hurling the noxious substance onto the synagogue’s steps.

Earlier that same week, the same pair targeted Young Israel of Holliswood on Francis Lewis Boulevard. Worshippers arriving for Friday morning services found the oily, foul-smelling material spread across the entrance of the synagogue.

Both incidents prompted immediate response from NYPD officers, who secured the areas and collected evidence. The department has assigned the case to its Hate Crimes Task Force, emphasizing the seriousness of attacks directed at religious institutions.

Community reaction

Members of the congregations expressed shock and disappointment, describing the act as a blatant violation of religious freedom and a threat to the safety of worshippers. While no injuries were reported, the presence of motor oil created a slippery hazard, and the feces posed a public health concern.

Local leaders, including the rabbis of both synagogues, called for calm and urged the community to remain vigilant. They also thanked law‑enforcement for their swift investigation and asked residents to report any additional information that could aid in identifying the perpetrators.

Police investigation

Detectives are reviewing the surveillance videos and have released a description of the suspects to the public, hoping that anyone who recognizes them will come forward. The NYPD has not disclosed further details about the suspects’ identities or motives, pending ongoing investigative work.

The Hate Crimes Task Force will continue to work with the synagogues, local officials, and community members to ensure a thorough investigation. Authorities stress that hate‑motivated vandalism will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

What residents can do

Police encourage anyone who witnessed the incidents or who may have seen the suspects in the surrounding neighborhoods to contact the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Unit. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the department’s online portal or by calling the dedicated hotline.

These attacks underscore the importance of protecting places of worship and upholding the constitutional right to free exercise of religion. The NYPD’s ongoing efforts aim to bring those responsible to justice and to reassure the Queens community that religious institutions remain safe spaces for worship and fellowship.
