NYPD Deploys Expanded Drone‑Countermeasure Teams for 2026 U.S. Open in Queens

Queens officials announced Thursday that the New York Police Department is stepping up its security presence for the 2026 U.S. Open, deploying a suite of specialized units to counter unauthorized drones over the Flushing Meadows venue. The move follows a recent federal agreement that grants the NYPD direct tools and tactics to mitigate drone activity during the tournament.

New authority, new resources

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained that the department will field bomb squads, aviation and mounted units, an emergency service unit, and a range of intelligence and counter‑terrorism personnel. “Our bomb squad, aviation and mounted units, and our emergency service unit will work alongside the dedicated U.S. Open detail for the duration of this event,” Tisch said. “We will also employ explosive‑detection canines, heavy‑weapons teams, plain‑clothes officers and other resources as needed.”

Drone mitigation as part of a broader safety plan

Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner of the NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau said drone mitigation will be integrated into the department’s overall security strategy. “Mitigation is one of several tools that we use to protect against unauthorized drones,” Weiner said. “A federal temporary flight restriction will be in place over the facility, allowing us to take these countermeasures.”

The NYPD’s new authority marks the first time a local law‑enforcement agency in the United States will conduct in‑depth drone‑mitigation operations at a major sporting event. Tisch emphasized that the U.S. Open will be the inaugural venue for this capability, adding that the department will continue to monitor the airspace throughout the tournament to safeguard players, staff and the thousands of spectators expected.

Why drones matter to event security

Officials cited recent incidents at other high‑profile events, noting that several drones were intercepted during World Cup matches earlier this year. Unauthorised aerial devices pose risks ranging from privacy violations to potential delivery of contraband or even explosives. By establishing a temporary flight restriction and deploying counter‑drone teams, the NYPD aims to pre‑empt any such threats.

The expanded security effort reflects a broader trend of municipal agencies collaborating with federal partners to address emerging technology risks. While the Department of Homeland Security provides the legal framework, the NYPD will execute the on‑the‑ground response.

Impact on fans and participants

Organizers expect the heightened security posture to have minimal impact on the fan experience. Spectators will continue to enjoy open seating, food vendors and traditional tournament amenities, while the NYPD’s visible presence is intended to reassure attendees that safety remains a top priority.

As the U.S. Open draws international athletes and media attention, the city’s proactive approach underscores New York’s commitment to protecting one of the nation’s premier sporting traditions while respecting constitutional rights and public safety.
