NYC Mayor Mamdani Announces $30M Plan to Strengthen Jewish Community Safety

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a comprehensive plan to address the rise of antisemitism in the city, committing more than $30 million to bolster security, support Jewish cultural institutions, and re‑activate an inter‑agency security working group.

Funding and program details

The mayor’s roadmap includes $2 million for the Queens Holocaust Memorial Garden and $2.5 million for the Center for New Jewish Culture in Brooklyn. Additional resources will be directed to other Jewish non‑profits and cultural centers across the five boroughs.

City officials say antisemitic hate crimes are up 8 % so far this year and now represent over half of all hate incidents reported to the NYPD, underscoring the urgency of the initiative.

Mayor’s outreach and rationale

In a two‑minute video posted to social media, Mamdani said he has spent the past year meeting Jewish New Yorkers in dining rooms, on subways, and in synagogues, hearing repeatedly that antisemitism is “real and growing.” He framed the plan as a “road map” for the administration to confront what he called a scourge threatening the city’s fabric.

“For generations, Jewish New Yorkers have sustained our city,” Mamdani said, referencing composer Leonard Bernstein and local businesses such as Kleinfeld Bridal and Katz’s Deli. “Today, we hold a responsibility to sustain and protect our Jewish neighbors.”

Reactions from the community

The announcement drew mixed responses. A coalition of Jewish groups—including the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York, the Jewish Community Relations Council, the American Jewish Committee, and the New York Board of Rabbis—acknowledged the increased security funding but criticized the mayor’s past rhetoric on Israel, saying it “perpetuates the very conditions that fuel antisemitism.”

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti‑Defamation League, warned that security grants alone do not replace “moral clarity,” and argued that the mayor’s failure to define antisemitism and to distance himself from partisan statements undermines the effort.

Conversely, some leaders welcomed the initiative. Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, called the plan “an important step” toward a whole‑of‑government response that links Jewish safety with inclusive, pluralistic democracy. New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, who authored legislation requiring police to publish buffer‑zone plans for schools and houses of worship, praised the increased funding for security and Holocaust education.

Political context

The strategy arrives amid heightened scrutiny of Mamdani’s stance on the Israel‑Gaza conflict. During his campaign, he suggested the mayor could arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under an International Criminal Court warrant—a claim later clarified as beyond the mayor’s legal authority. He also faced criticism for likening the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s political spending to “monsters.”

Despite the controversy, the mayor’s office emphasized that the plan is rooted in public‑safety needs rather than partisan debate, aiming to protect all New Yorkers while respecting constitutional freedoms.
