NYC Mayor Faces Backlash Over Coffee Shop’s Ban on Jewish Congressman

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism for his silence after a Brooklyn coffee shop, Poetica, banned Jewish Congressman Dan Goldman. The coffee shop posted a message on social media telling Goldman not to return after he visited with his daughter.

Coffee Shop’s Message Sparks Outrage

The message, which has since been deleted, stated that the coffee shop would have declined to serve Goldman had staff recognized him. Goldman has been a vocal supporter of Israel and has received financial contributions from the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC.

The coffee shop’s message sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for a boycott of the business. Fox News Radio analyst Josh Kraushaar wrote, ‘Shameful,’ in response to the news. The CEO and co-founder of the antisemitism-focused nonprofit Boundless Israel also spoke out, saying, ‘A coffee shop in Mamdani’s New York City told Jewish Congressman Dan Goldman he wasn’t welcome in their store.’

Mamdani’s Silence Criticized

Mamdani’s office declined to comment on the matter, which has led to criticism from some who feel that the mayor should have spoken out against the coffee shop’s actions. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon announced that her office has opened an investigation into the matter, stating that federal law prohibits public accommodations from discriminating against patrons based on their race, religion, or national origin.
