New York Democratic congressional candidate Brad Lander has defended his endorsement of Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, despite their differing views on the future of Israel. In a recent CNN appearance, Lander acknowledged the policy rift between him and El-Sayed, who is running against Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary.
Differing Views on Israel
Lander was questioned by interviewer Dana Bash about his decision to back El-Sayed, who has previously argued that a Jewish state is inherently illiberal. Lander explained that he and El-Sayed disagree on this issue, but their shared history and mutual focus on domestic policies, such as universal healthcare and removing corporate money from politics, led to the endorsement.
Lander noted that while El-Sayed supports a binational state with equal rights for all residents, he himself firmly supports a two-state solution featuring a majority-Jewish state alongside a majority-Palestinian state, both protecting their respective minority populations.
