NWACC students register to vote on National Voter Registration Day in Springdale

Students at Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) in Springdale gathered in the campus lobby on National Voter Registration Day to register to vote and learn about the upcoming November 3 election. The event gave first‑time voters a simple, in‑person way to become eligible voters before the October 5 registration deadline.

Student motivation and community impact

Joseph Gonzalez, a 19‑year‑old NWACC student and Springdale native, said he will be voting for the first time. “I’ve always been told local politics is probably the biggest, because that’s where it starts, like the foundation to what’s bigger,” Gonzalez explained. He added that meeting other politically engaged students has inspired him to learn more about the voting process.

“I don’t know too many people who are in college, but the ones I’ve met, they’re all very inclined to vote. They’re all more politically involved than I am. So it’s good to see. Plus, it helps me learn, like what I should know or what I don’t see every day,” he said.

Election officials stress the importance of down‑ballot races

At the registration table, Gonzalez spoke with Jennifer Price, director of elections for Washington County. Price reminded students that while presidential and gubernatorial offices receive a lot of attention, the offices at the bottom of the ballot—city council, school board, justice of the peace—directly affect daily life. “Those offices that impact us at the city level, the county level are just as important because that’s where we live,” Price said.

Next steps for voters

Washington County officials note that the deadline to register to vote is October 5. Residents who prefer to vote absentee can request ballots now, and poll‑worker training is scheduled for September 21.

The voter registration drive underscores the college’s role in fostering civic engagement among young Arkansans, encouraging them to become “pillars” of their community rather than passive observers of change.
