Nvidia is joining forces with major Wall Street investors to provide over $500 billion in financing for the development of AI infrastructure. This move aims to support the growth of AI technology and make it more accessible to companies of all sizes.
Investing in AI Infrastructure
The partnership includes heavyweight institutional investors such as Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that AI compute, which refers to the hardware and software underpinning AI models, is becoming an investable asset class. He referred to these investments as ‘AI factories.’
The financing platforms will enable smaller, start-up AI companies to borrow money to purchase compute, which is the processing power needed to train and build their models. Apollo President Jim Zelter noted that modern compute has emerged as a scarce, mission-critical asset class with compelling investment characteristics.
Nvidia is at the center of the AI boom, manufacturing chips and other hardware used in various tech companies’ AI models. The company’s stock has more than quadrupled since the start of 2024, reaching a market valuation of $5.3 trillion.
However, investors have grown nervous about the amount of money and debt-financed investment surrounding the sector. The circular nature of many deals has raised concerns that demand for AI may be artificially inflated. Nigel Green, CEO and founder of deVere Group, a financial advisory firm, expressed concerns that treating chips as a bankable, long-duration asset may not be viable due to their rapid depreciation.
