NTSB to brief Miami public on deadly Amazon Prime Air cargo crash

Miami‑Dade officials said the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will hold a live media briefing at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT) on Monday to share the latest findings from the tragic Amazon Prime Air cargo plane crash that occurred Sunday at Miami International Airport.

What happened

Prime Air Flight 7598, a 32‑year‑old Boeing 767‑300 freighter that had previously served as a passenger jet, overran the airport’s diagonal runway just before 2 p.m. EDT. The aircraft struck several ground vehicles, killing five people and injuring ten others. Among the injured, three remain in critical condition.

Miami‑Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah reported that at least two victims were trapped inside the vehicles hit by the plane, while the pilot and co‑pilot were trapped inside the aircraft. More than 60 rescue units and roughly 200 personnel responded, and crews were still contending with a fuel leak late Sunday.

Immediate response and flight disruptions

The airport halted all operations immediately after the crash, but flights resumed by Sunday evening. Nevertheless, the incident caused significant delays for travelers. By Monday noon, inbound flights were delayed an average of over five hours, and FlightAware recorded 232 cancellations in the preceding 24‑hour period.

NTSB investigation

Following the accident, the NTSB announced on X that it had “launched a go team” to investigate. The upcoming briefing will provide the public with the board’s initial observations, including data from flight‑tracking services that show the aircraft was traveling at 112 knots (129 mph) when it left the usable runway.

Community impact

Miami residents and travelers have expressed concern over safety at the busy international hub. Local officials emphasized that the swift response of fire and rescue crews helped prevent a larger disaster, and they praised the cooperation between airport authorities, the NTSB, and federal aviation agencies.

While the investigation is still in its early stages, the NTSB’s transparency and the scheduled briefing demonstrate a commitment to keeping the community informed and ensuring that any necessary safety improvements are identified promptly.
