Nova Minerals brings 500 tons of antimony equipment to Port MacKenzie, creating jobs and boosting Alaska’s strategic mineral supply

A barge loaded with about 500 tons of processing and refining equipment docked at Port MacKenzie just after 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The shipment, which includes more than 40 containers and several oversized loads of crushing, ore‑sorting, milling, flotation and refining gear, arrived a full day ahead of schedule from Seattle.

Federal support and President Trump’s executive order

The delivery is part of Nova Minerals’ effort to build a fully secured domestic supply chain for antimony, a critical mineral identified by the Department of War under Title III of the Defense Production Act. The project is funded by a $43.4 million award from the department, a direct result of President Trump’s March 20, 2025 Executive Order titled “Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production,” which cleared regulatory hurdles for private companies pursuing critical‑mineral projects.

Local leaders praise the milestone

Nova CEO Christopher Gerteisen said the early arrival will allow construction to begin “at speed,” noting that acquiring modern equipment from a recently decommissioned North‑American site saved both time and capital costs. U.S. Congressman Nick Begich called the shipment “an important first step toward refining antimony in the Mat‑Su Valley and building a secure, fully domestic supply chain right here in Alaska.”

Mat‑Su Borough Mayor Edna Devries highlighted the economic impact, stating that the equipment arrival validates years of infrastructure investment aimed at turning Port MacKenzie into an Alaskan industrial hub. “This project represents jobs, economic diversification, value‑added resource development, and a stronger future for Alaska,” she said.

State Rep. Kevin McCabe, representing the Big Lake area, expressed excitement about the job‑creation potential and the refinery’s flexible, modular design. He explained that the facility will initially produce antimony trisulfide and can later expand to other refined antimony products, such as metal and trioxide, to meet evolving market demands.

Strategic location and logistics advantages

The Port MacKenzie site offers year‑round deep‑water access, connections to Alaska’s road network via the West Susitna Access Road, and a rail spur linking to the Alaska Railroad mainline. These logistics assets are expected to streamline the movement of raw material and finished products as the refinery moves toward production.

Broader Alaska critical‑mineral initiative

Alaska already boasts reserves of 49 of the 50 critical minerals identified by the federal government. In July 2026, the University of Alaska‑Fairbanks led the Alaska Critical Mineral Collaborative to receive designation as an NSF Regional Innovation Engine, potentially bringing up to $160 million in funding over the next decade to further accelerate critical‑mineral development across the state.

What this means for the community

The antimony refinery is expected to create a range of construction and permanent jobs, stimulate local businesses, and diversify the Mat‑Su economy beyond traditional sectors. Residents anticipate increased tax revenue that can support community services, schools, and infrastructure improvements.

Nova Minerals plans to begin construction soon, with the modular design allowing phased expansion as demand grows. The company’s partnership with local officials and federal agencies underscores a shared commitment to national security, energy storage, and advanced electronics—areas where antimony plays a vital role.

As Alaska continues to position itself as a leader in critical‑mineral production, the Port MacKenzie shipment stands as a tangible sign of progress, reflecting both local ambition and the broader national strategy championed by President Trump to secure America’s strategic supply chains.
