Norwalk School District Schedules Meeting on $65 Million Bond for New Elementary School

Norwalk, Iowa — The Norwalk Community School District is preparing voters for a $65 million bond referendum that will appear on the November ballot. To help residents understand the proposal, the district has scheduled an informational meeting for Thursday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. in the district office on Wright Road.

Meeting purpose and agenda

District administrators will outline the details of the bond measure, including how the funds will be allocated, the timeline for construction, and the anticipated impact on students and families. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and provide feedback directly to school officials.

What the bond would fund

If voters approve the measure, the majority of the $65 million would be dedicated to building a new elementary school. The new facility is intended to address overcrowding at existing schools, provide modern classrooms, and create spaces that support contemporary teaching methods and extracurricular activities.

Why the district is seeking voter approval

School districts in Iowa are required by state law to obtain voter approval for bonds that exceed certain thresholds. By placing the referendum on the ballot, Norwalk ensures that the community has a direct say in how public education dollars are spent. The district emphasizes that the bond is a long‑term investment in the educational foundation of the town, aiming to improve outcomes for children and strengthen the community’s appeal to families.

How residents can participate

All registered voters in the Norwalk school district are encouraged to attend the Sept. 3 meeting. The district will also provide written materials and a recorded webinar for those unable to attend in person. Voters will receive a ballot description of the measure in the mail ahead of the November election, and the district will hold additional outreach events as the election approaches.

Next steps

After the informational session, the district will compile community input and finalize the ballot language. The referendum will be listed on the November 3, 2026 general election ballot. If approved, the district plans to begin design work in early 2027, with construction slated to start later that year.
