Northwestern State University opened its campus Friday for a full day of STEM exploration, welcoming over 600 prospective students from 18 high schools across the region. The event, organized by the university’s School of STEM, gave students a chance to try their hand at everything from flying drones to handling snakes, guiding model airplanes and cracking computer codes.
Hands‑on learning in small groups
Participants were divided into small groups and rotated through a series of labs and classrooms. Each station showcased a different branch of science, engineering, mathematics or technology. Students worked side‑by‑side with current NSU students and faculty, asking questions about coursework, career paths and scholarship opportunities.
Broad curriculum and career options
The School of STEM includes the Departments of Biology and Microbiology, Mathematics, Physical Science, Engineering Technology and Veterinary Technology. In addition to traditional majors, the university offers concentrations in physics, chemistry, computer science, sports analytics, advanced manufacturing, forensics and clinical laboratory science, among other high‑demand fields. Graduates are prepared for careers ranging from manufacturing and computer science to medicine, veterinary science and pharmacy.
Regional participation
High schools from Rapides, Caddo, Allen, Vernon, Natchitoches, DeSoto, Webster and Red River parishes sent students to the event, underscoring the university’s role as a regional hub for STEM education. Dr. Anna Dugas, a physics professor and collaboration facilitator for the School of STEM, coordinated the day’s activities and highlighted the importance of early exposure to technical fields.
Future opportunities
Attendees left with information about NSU’s undergraduate programs, scholarship options and upcoming campus tours. The university hopes the experience will inspire more local students to pursue STEM degrees and fill the growing demand for skilled professionals in Louisiana and beyond.
