Northwest Side Bakery Reinspected After Live and Dead Pests Discovered

San Antonio health officials returned to the Northwest side bakery located inside Super Mercado Poco Loco at 6050 Ingram on September 3, after an initial inspection on August 24 uncovered several violations, including the presence of pests.

Inspection findings and scores

The original Metro Health report listed seven demerits and gave the bakery a score of 87. When KSAT visited the site on Thursday, the bakery was still displaying an older score of 93 behind the register, suggesting the establishment had not yet updated its public posting.

According to the report, inspectors found one live pest on the floor behind a refrigerator and a dead pest in the back‑left area of the bakery. The agency also cited temperature violations for items such as queso fresca and sour cream, noting that any cold food held above 41°F for more than four hours must be discarded immediately to prevent bacterial growth.

Owner’s response

When KSAT approached the bakery, a woman arrived with a man on the phone who answered questions on behalf of the business. The manager confirmed that the bakery maintains a pest‑control contract and emphasized that they are working to meet Metro Health’s requirements, including posting the correct inspection score.

Regarding the temperature concerns, the manager said queso fresco is not used in the bakery’s baked goods and stressed that the team is committed to providing the best possible quality for customers.

Reinspection and broader context

Metro Health’s spokesperson confirmed the September 3 reinspection and indicated that the bakery’s compliance status would be updated accordingly. The agency’s inspection system assigns scores on a 100‑point scale, with higher numbers reflecting better compliance.

For comparison, several other local eateries received perfect scores of 100 during the same week (Aug. 23‑29), including Mexico Taco, Super Donut, Amigos Snacks And More, Crumble Cookies, Whataburger, Fat Tummy Empanadas, Hai’s, Kung Fu BaoBao, Saritas Mexican Restaurant #2, and Chuzz! Burgers.

What this means for customers

San Antonio residents who shop at the Northwest side bakery should feel reassured that the establishment is under active oversight and has taken steps to address the identified issues. Patrons are encouraged to look for the updated inspection score and to report any concerns to Metro Health.

KSAT’s “Behind the Kitchen Door” series continues to monitor local food‑service establishments, helping the community stay informed about health and safety standards.
