Northwest ISD Sues Gun Range Over Stray Bullets

Northwest ISD has filed a lawsuit against Quail Creek Gun Range after two bullets struck the exterior of a new middle school campus. The district believes the bullets came from the gun range, which is about a mile away from the school.

Incidents and Investigation

The first bullet was found lodged in a wall on May 26, and the second bullet struck a glass wall at the school’s stadium press box last week. The district filed a police report after the first incident and followed up with Northlake Police after the second.

According to the lawsuit, the gun range’s owner, David Rose, admitted that a patron could intentionally or inadvertently elevate a firearm and shoot over the protective berm. Rose also acknowledged that more safety features could prevent bullets from being fired over the berm, but the gun range has not taken such measures.

Lawsuit and Demands

The district is seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent the gun range from operating in a way that negligently allows bullets to damage school property or endanger students, parents, staff, and visitors. The lawsuit does not aim to shut down the gun range but rather to implement reasonable safety measures.

Student camps scheduled for this week will now begin after the gun range closes. The school’s principal outlined the incidents and the district’s actions in a letter to parents, emphasizing the importance of safety improvements at the gun range.
