Homeowners in the Northwest Crossing subdivision of San Antonio are taking matters into their own hands after a series of mail thefts left their cluster mailbox empty. A resident named Dane, who installed a security camera aimed at the mailbox area, posted video that captures a man pulling up in a truck, stepping out, and deliberately turning the camera away before opening the mailbox.
Video shows suspect obstructing camera
The footage shows the suspect holding an object in front of the lens, then reaching up to swivel the camera away from the mailbox doors. “He pushed the camera away so you can’t see him actually open the mailbox, you can hear him doing all of that,” Dane said. “Then in the morning every single piece of mail was missing from our mailbox and the doors were left open.”
Multiple incidents prompt HOA action
Dane noted that the mailbox doors have been found open on three separate occasions, including twice since the camera was installed. “We’ve had three instances where the mailboxes have been open,” he explained. “The first time was before the camera was up and it’s been two now.” Concerned residents brought the issue to a homeowners association (HOA) meeting on Tuesday night, urging the group to seek a long‑term solution.
The HOA reported that the United States Postal Service (USPS) informed them a makeshift key may have been used to break into the back of the mailbox. In response, the association said it is exploring additional security measures, though specific options were not detailed at the meeting.
Law enforcement investigating
Both the USPS and the San Antonio Police Department confirmed they are investigating the thefts. Police said the case remains open and they are reviewing the video to identify the suspect. Residents are being asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near the mailbox cluster.
Mail theft has been a growing concern across the San Antonio area. Since May, KSAT has reported five separate incidents ranging from the Hollywood Park neighborhood to the Northeast Side and the far northwest portion of Bexar County. The pattern underscores the need for stronger mailbox security and community awareness.
Resident’s plea for help and a reminder
Dane concluded his remarks with a direct message to the thief: “Get a job. There’s plenty of ways to make money. Don’t try to get someone’s credit card and do fraud. It just costs everyone money.” He hopes anyone who recognizes the man in the video will contact the San Antonio Police Department or KSAT.
Neighborhood watch groups and local volunteers are also being encouraged to share the video on social media and neighborhood apps to broaden the search for the suspect. As the investigation continues, residents remain hopeful that the combined efforts of the community, the HOA, and law‑enforcement will bring the perpetrator to justice and restore confidence in the safety of their mail.
