Northeast Travis County leaders are seeking public feedback on a new report that highlights the needs and opportunities in the area. The report, which was completed earlier this year, covers topics such as transportation, housing, demographics, and the job market.
Background
The Northeast District Plan was initially proposed by council member Natasha Harper-Madison and commissioner Jeff Travillion in 2024. The plan aims to guide new investments and growth in the area, which has seen faster population growth than Austin or Travis County overall.
The district has a unique set of characteristics, including a higher share of Black and Latino residents, more single-family housing, and relatively lower incomes and housing costs. However, the area is also at risk of displacement, with the share of Black households falling by a third from the 2010s to the 2020s.
Get Involved
The public can submit feedback on the report online in English and Spanish until July 6. The feedback will be used to inform the next steps in the planning process, which is expected to wrap up late next year.
Commissioner Jeff Travillion emphasized the importance of community engagement in the planning process, stating that the report provides a unified picture of the current conditions and that the next step of meaningful community engagement is critical to setting priorities for the area’s future.
Council member Natasha Harper-Madison also highlighted the need for community involvement, stating that the goal is to work with East Austin residents to build a shared vision for modern infrastructure, perpetually affordable housing, and economic opportunity.
