North Fort Myers Man Charged After Mother’s Body Found in River

A North Fort Myers resident, Joshua Kuke Cullen, 47, is facing serious charges after authorities allege he wrapped his deceased mother’s body in a rug and dumped it into the Peace River. The motive, according to investigators, was to access her financial accounts.

Investigation Unfolds

The case began on May 25 when Cullen reported his mother missing from their shared home. However, his inconsistent stories raised suspicions. He claimed not to have seen her since March, suggesting she might have suffered a stroke, been hospitalized, or left with an unidentified wealthy man.

As detectives delved deeper, they discovered financial irregularities, alleging Cullen was draining his mother’s bank accounts and had purchased an RV. This financial activity prompted a more thorough investigation.

Discovery of the Body

On May 29, Charlotte County deputies recovered human remains near the Peace River. Sheriff Bill Prummell stated that a group of boaters noticed something submerged in the water. Upon investigation, they found a woman wrapped in carpet, weighed down by cinder blocks and chains.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno confirmed the remains were those of Cullen’s mother. Although she was reported missing on Memorial Day, evidence suggested she had been deceased for weeks. Near the river, investigators found a wheelbarrow, blue straps, and a ladder, believed to have been used to transport and submerge the body. Traffic surveillance captured Cullen’s vehicle with these items, linking him to the disposal site.

Legal Proceedings

Cullen was arrested at his residence in the Twin Pine Villages neighborhood. He is currently held in the Lee County Jail on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on July 6. The charges against him include neglect of an elderly person and abuse of a dead human body.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and thorough investigation by local authorities in uncovering the truth behind such tragic events.
