A chaotic Fourth of July block party in North Charleston, South Carolina, turned violent when gunfire erupted and a mob attacked police officers. The North Charleston Police Department announced charges against six people, including four juveniles, in connection with the incident.

According to authorities, the confrontation began when officers responded to a city-permitted neighborhood block party in the Chicora-Cherokee community. Initially, police received reports of people firing fireworks toward passing vehicles, which later escalated to discharging firearms.
Despite efforts to de-escalate the situation, multiple fights broke out, and additional gunshots were fired, prompting officers to exit their patrol vehicles to separate those involved and restore order. During the response, officers recovered multiple firearms, including a semi-automatic rifle, as well as a makeshift spear.
Multiple officers were assaulted during the incident, with two female officers suffering minor injuries. The North Charleston Police Department stated that attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable and those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Charges and Investigation
The six individuals charged include 19-year-old Giovanni Mekhi Sincere Campbell, who is charged with possession of a semi-automatic rifle, and 18-year-old Sa’Mya Adriana Collette Weaver, who is charged with breach of peace and assault on a police officer while resisting arrest. The juveniles face charges ranging from third-degree assault by mob to possession of a semi-automatic rifle.
The investigation remains active, and additional arrests and charges are possible. The North Charleston Police Department thanked members of the community who assisted officers during the violence and responding agencies for their support.
