North Carolina’s Scott Forbes and Oklahoma’s Skip Johnson have known each other for decades, having spent time scouting talent showcases and engaging in recruiting battles as assistants. Despite their friendship, they are now on opposite sides of the championship series.
The Tar Heels have had a strong season, losing consecutive games only once and being ranked no lower than No. 4 by D1Baseball.com over the last two months. In contrast, the Sooners had a more tumultuous season, finishing 11th in the SEC and being unranked when they entered the national tournament.
Team Performances
Both teams have performed well in the CWS, with North Carolina winning five straight games and Oklahoma on a season-best eight-game streak. The Sooners have been averaging 10.4 runs per game with 22 homers during their win streak, while the Tar Heels have been led by freshman Caden Glauber, who has allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings over three CWS games.
The Game 1 pitching matchup will feature North Carolina ace Jason DeCaro against Oklahoma’s Cord Rager. DeCaro has been impressive, going 6 2/3 innings and striking out nine in Carolina’s 6-2 win over Mississippi last Friday.
