North Caddo Magnet High retires Officer Marc Brock’s No. 55 jersey

VIVIAN, La. — On Friday evening, North Caddo Magnet High School turned a football field into a place of remembrance, retiring the No. 55 jersey of former student and beloved community officer Marc Brock. The ceremony marked the first time Brock’s family set foot on the school’s field since his tragic death in November 2025.

A tribute rooted in community and faith

Officer Brock, a 25‑year‑old Vivian police officer, was killed while serving his hometown. His sacrifice has resonated deeply with residents who know him as a devoted son, a caring brother, and a steadfast protector of the community’s values. The school’s decision to retire his jersey reflects the town’s commitment to honoring those who give their lives for others, a principle that aligns with the Christian belief in self‑less service.

Before the night‑time football game, Brock’s aunt, Angela Chanell, and other close relatives walked onto the field to receive the jersey. “Being back in the same place that you kind of left him, that part, it makes it a little bit harder,” Chanell said, her voice trembling with both grief and pride.

Jersey retired alongside a coach’s number

In a symbolic gesture, the school unveiled Brock’s No. 55 on the press box, side by side with the number of longtime coach Les Mason, who also graduated from North Caddo. Principal Jason Laufenberg explained, “He coached here. He graduated here. He was a huge piece of our community and the school. It’s the least we could do to honor his memory.” The dual display underscores the deep ties between the school’s athletic tradition and the broader community.

Former partner and fellow officer, Cpl. Joshua McCauley, reflected on the lingering pain of the loss. “Coming up to a year still seems the same, doesn’t seem real. We’re still going to try to remember Marc in the best way we can,” he said.

Legacy of service and mentorship

Chanell noted that Brock’s desire to give back to Vivian stemmed from his own upbringing. “Part of the reason that he wanted to be in this community was to make a difference with the kids, just from growing up here and seeing what the coaches gave to him,” she said. The jersey retirement serves as a reminder to current students that service, faith, and family are the foundations of a strong community.

The ceremony began at 6:20 p.m., allowing the North Caddo community to gather, pray, and celebrate Brock’s life. As the lights dimmed over the stadium, the retired jersey was raised, ensuring that No. 55 will remain a permanent part of the school’s heritage.

Looking forward

While the pain of loss remains, the event offered a moment of unity for Vivian residents. It reinforced the town’s commitment to honoring those who protect its families and highlighted the role of local schools in preserving the memory of true heroes.
