An independent autopsy into the death of Nolan Wells, 18, has yielded inconclusive results, according to attorney Ben Crump. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Roger Mitchell, found a red discoloration on Wells’ head, but couldn’t determine if any non-accidental factors contributed to his death.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden reviewed the autopsy results and said the head injury doesn’t appear to be a result of foul play. ‘It could be from bumping into something in the water,’ Baden said. ‘It’s a minor injury that could be totally innocent.’

Wells disappeared on July 4 after a boat trip to Horn Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was found two days later by a National Park Service ranger. The official autopsy has not been completed, and officials have not released a cause of death.
