Nithya Raman defeats incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in Los Angeles mayoral race

Los Angeles voters chose city‑council member Nithya Raman over incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a decisive mayoral election. Raman, a 45‑year‑old urban planner supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, ran a rapid campaign after announcing her candidacy just hours before the filing deadline.

Campaign focus and promises

Raman’s platform centered on building affordable housing, expanding parks for families, improving transit, and restoring public safety for working families. She pledged to overhaul the city’s approach to homelessness by expanding medical outreach teams, increasing housing options, and aiming to cut the number of people living in tents by at least half by the time Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Olympic Games.

Criticism of the Bass administration

Raman criticized Mayor Bass for what she described as a “broken and unjust status quo,” pointing to persistent potholes, broken streetlights, and a rise in crime. She also called Bass’s efforts to reduce homelessness ineffective, arguing that the city’s billions in spending have not solved the problem.

Mayor Bass, who became the first Los Angeles mayor in two decades to lose a re‑election bid, responded by congratulating Raman and promising a smooth transition. Bass noted that her first term was marred by the Palisades Fire and other challenges, but maintained that she had made progress on public safety and housing.

Endorsements and political backdrop

Raman received limited backing from the Democratic establishment. While she was supported by advocacy groups such as Our Revolution and the Sierra Club, she did not secure endorsements from most local elected officials. In contrast, Bass was endorsed by Governor Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the majority of the Los Angeles City Council.

Billionaire developer Rick Caruso, who had backed Bass in the 2022 race, said he voted for Bass but did not formally endorse her this cycle.

Polling and voter sentiment

A Berkeley‑IGS/Los Angeles Times poll conducted Oct. 19‑25 found that about four in ten likely voters said reducing homeless encampments should be a top priority for the next mayor, while roughly three in ten emphasized public safety or affordable housing.

Raman’s victory reflects a broader trend of left‑wing insurgent candidates challenging establishment figures in major cities, echoing recent elections in New York and elsewhere.

What’s next for Los Angeles

With the Olympics on the horizon, Raman’s administration will face pressure to address infrastructure, public safety and housing shortages quickly. Her stated goal is to restore “an ambitious, joyful, creative and entrepreneurial Los Angeles.” The city council will now work with the new mayor to implement her policy agenda and oversee the transition of city services.
