Nigeria Parliament Halts Official Visits to South Africa Over Anti‑Migrant Violence

ABUJA — In a decisive move to protect Nigerian citizens abroad, the National Assembly voted on Friday to suspend all official visits to South Africa until the safety of Nigerians can be assured. The suspension, announced by clerk Kamoru Ogunlana, reflects deep concern over a wave of anti‑immigrant violence that has left dozens dead, injured and forced to abandon homes and businesses.

Parliament’s Statement

Ogunlana said the parliament is “particularly concerned by reports of Nigerians being killed, injured, displaced and forced to abandon their businesses, investments, homes and other properties as a result of recurring violent attacks.” The statement frames the suspension as a strong expression of concern for the welfare of Nigerians living and conducting legitimate enterprises in South Africa.

Background on the Violence

South Africa has long attracted migrants from across the continent, drawn by its relative wealth and job opportunities. However, periodic outbreaks of xenophobic unrest have plagued the country, with protesters blaming foreign workers for high unemployment, crime and pressure on public services. In June, two Nigerians were killed during anti‑migrant riots, one allegedly by police and the other by unidentified attackers.

According to Nigeria’s minister of state for foreign affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, at least 98 Nigerians have been killed since 2022 in mob attacks, hate‑related violence and extrajudicial killings. The minister raised the issue with South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola during a July meeting in Abuja, urging stronger protection for Nigerian nationals.

Migration Numbers

South Africa’s latest government figures show that nearly 90,000 people have either been voluntarily repatriated or deported since the migration tensions began. Home‑country governments, however, report a higher total of about 178,000 migrants affected, underscoring the scale of the crisis.

Implications for Bilateral Relations

The parliamentary suspension sends a clear diplomatic signal: Nigeria will not continue normal engagement with a nation that fails to safeguard its citizens. While trade and cultural ties remain important, the safety of Nigerians abroad is being placed first. The move may prompt South Africa to reassess its immigration enforcement policies and address the root causes of xenophobic sentiment.

What Comes Next?

Parliament has not set a timeline for lifting the suspension. Officials indicated that any future resumption of visits will depend on demonstrable improvements in security for Nigerian migrants. In the meantime, the Nigerian foreign ministry is likely to continue diplomatic pressure, seeking assurances from South African authorities that anti‑immigrant attacks will be curbed and that victims receive justice.

For Nigerians living in South Africa, the suspension underscores the importance of staying informed about local safety conditions and maintaining contact with their embassy. Community groups and consular services are urging affected individuals to register any incidents and to seek assistance where needed.
