The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for approximately 1,076,999 Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler vehicles nationwide. The recall affects model year 2021 through 2025 vehicles and is due to a possible electrical connection problem in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring.
Potential Fire Hazard
According to the NHTSA, the defect could cause combustible materials to overheat, creating a potential fire hazard even when the vehicle is turned off. The agency is aware of 51 vehicle fires and one reported injury connected to the issue. As a result, officials are advising owners to park affected vehicles outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until repairs are completed.
The recall follows an investigation opened by the NHTSA after multiple reports of fires involving the affected vehicles. The investigation helped identify the wiring issue as a likely cause of the incidents. FCA US, the manufacturer of the vehicles, will begin mailing owner notification letters on July 9. A final repair remedy is still under development.
Starting June 11, owners will be able to search their vehicle identification numbers on the NHTSA website to determine whether their vehicle is included in the recall. The NHTSA will continue to monitor the situation as FCA US develops a permanent repair solution and notifies affected vehicle owners nationwide.
