New York marks 25 years of 9/11 with ceremonies, performances and tributes

New York City residents and visitors will have a wide range of opportunities on Friday to honor the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The schedule emphasizes reverence for the victims, gratitude to first responders, and community healing.

Ground Zero ceremony (8:30 a.m.)

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum will host its annual ceremony for families who lost loved ones. Although the event is not open to the public, it will be livestreamed so anyone can join in the solemn reading of the nearly 3,000 victims’ names and observe moments of silence that mark key moments of the attacks. A seventh moment of silence has been added this year to honor those who have since died from 9/11‑related illnesses.

FDNY firehouse open to the public (Dawn‑to‑Dusk Remembrance)

FDNY Ten House, the firehouse nearest the former World Trade Center site, will welcome visitors throughout the day. Guests can explore the station, meet firefighters and reflect on the bravery displayed on that tragic day.

Wreath‑laying at the FDNY Fire Museum (11:30 a.m.)

Attendees may tour the museum’s exhibits, which chronicle the New York Fire Department’s history and its heroic response to the attacks, before participating in a wreath‑laying ceremony.

Butoh dance performance (1:00 p.m.)

The New York Butoh Institute will present a live performance titled “Unforgotten: Butoh for 9/11” in Times Square. The avant‑garde dance pays tribute to the victims, especially firefighters and police officers who gave their lives.

Memorial & Museum reopens (3:00 p.m.)

After the ceremony, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will reopen its galleries to the public, allowing visitors to continue their personal reflections.

Short film screening (6:00 p.m.)

The premiere of Resilience, a short documentary about the ongoing health impacts faced by FDNY firefighters who participated in rescue and recovery, will be shown at the museum.

Baseball tributes (6:30 p.m.)

The New York Yankees and New York Mets will begin a three‑game series (Sept. 11‑13) with a pre‑game tribute honoring first responders and the victims of the attacks.

Additional commemorations

City agencies have been encouraged to hold their own moments of remembrance. A concert by the New York Philharmonic and an interfaith memorial service at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church & National Shrine are also scheduled for Friday, providing further opportunities for families and friends to gather in prayer and music.

These events underscore the city’s commitment to remembering the past while supporting the families of those lost and the brave men and women who continue to serve the community.
