New Smyrna Beach drivers could soon need just one annual parking pass to access both city-owned beachfront lots and Volusia County beach parking. The New Smyrna Beach City Commission unanimously approved an agreement that would phase out the city’s annual parking pass in favor of the county’s Park Volusia pass.
Parking Pass Changes
Currently, a Volusia County parking pass allows drivers to park on the beach and in county-owned lots. However, drivers who park in city-owned lots also need a separate New Smyrna Beach parking pass or risk receiving a citation. Under the proposed agreement, Park Volusia passholders would be able to park in both county and city-owned parking areas in New Smyrna Beach.
The county pass is already free for Volusia County residents. To support the transition, the city and county will integrate their parking permit databases, allowing parking enforcement officers to verify county permits through a vehicle’s license plate.
Residents who spoke with local news welcomed the proposed change, citing the current system’s confusion. The agreement now heads to the Volusia County Council for consideration next month. If approved, the new system is expected to take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
