A New Smyrna Beach woman and her family were terrorized Monday night after a man tried to break into their home while threatening to shoot and kill them.
Incident Details
Judy Lewis said she was sitting on her couch around 11:30 p.m. when she heard someone trying to open her front door near Ocean Avenue. Ring camera footage from the home captured the man pulling on the door handle and making threats, including yelling, “I’m gonna shoot your (expletive) up!”
Lewis said the man made a “finger-gun” gesture toward her son and said “boom boom boom” before threatening to shoot them. The man eventually walked away from the front door but made his way to the back of the home, where Lewis said he continued threatening them while the family was on the phone with 911.
The terrifying encounter lasted for about 10 minutes. Lewis believes the man may have been drunk. Police found the man a short distance from Lewis’ home and arrested him. He was identified as 63-year-old Kevin Moss of St. Augustine.
Lewis said the incident has left her family traumatized and has changed how she thinks about home security. “I’m definitely getting a gun, no question,” Lewis said. “We’re not gonna ever be that scared again.”
