New Sin Miedo Art Gallery, Portal Cinema and Guac‑off Festival Arrive in the Mission

The Mission’s cultural scene is set to expand this September with three exciting additions. Sin Miedo, a new art gallery, will open its doors on September 19 at 2831 Mission Street, near 24th Street. The space, which previously housed Climate Control gallery, will host exhibitions, classes, lectures, a library and a shop, providing a welcoming venue for Latino and other artists of color.

Community‑Driven Programming

Sin Miedo is a project of Sketchboard Co., a local nonprofit that runs weekly drawing sessions and workshops throughout the Bay Area. Sketchboard’s president, Natalie Gavidia, said the Mission was chosen because the organization already works there and because the city needs more accessible art spaces. “We absolutely love what we do and we’ve been doing it for such a long time,” Gavidia said. “It was the right time to gather everybody under one roof and celebrate the resistance of artists here in the Bay area.” Sketchboard will partner with Golden Gate Co‑op, a nearby printing company, to offer printing workshops and related events.

Gavidia envisions a typical day at the gallery that reflects the Mission’s vibrant culture: a walk through Golden Gate Park, a bus ride to the Mission, a Grand Coffee in one hand and a joint in the other, the scent of sage and the rhythm of cumbia filling the space, and an evening drink at the Latin American Club.

Portal Cinema Brings Indie Film to the Neighborhood

Also arriving soon is The Portal Cinema, a nonprofit movie theater located at 3293 Mission Street, near 29th Street. Founder Nellie Killian, who has programmed series for the Criterion Channel, the British Film Institute and the Museum of Moving Image, plans a single 45‑seat projection room equipped for DCP, 35 mm and 16 mm formats. The cinema will schedule more than 11 showings each week, ranging from repertory classics to new releases, global contemporary works and artist‑made moving‑image pieces.

Guac‑off Returns to Bernal Heights

Meanwhile, the 15th edition of the beloved Guac‑off competition will take place on September 12 at the Farmhouse of Guac, 3340 Folsom Street, near Ripley Street in Bernal Heights. Contestants will bring avocados, cilantro, lime and onions to vie for the guacamole crown. The event promises live jazz, free beer and plenty of guacamole for attendees, with chips provided by the organizers and celebrity judges yet to be announced.

These three initiatives underscore the Mission’s ongoing commitment to arts, culture and community gathering places. Residents can look forward to a richer calendar of creative experiences, from gallery openings and film screenings to a festive celebration of the region’s favorite dip.
