New Oshkosh Noise Ordinance Quieted Fall Pub Crawl, Residents Praise Calm Streets

Oshkosh, Wis. — The city’s new ordinance targeting excessive noise, crowding and underage drinking appears to have achieved its goal during this year’s fall pub crawl. The bi‑annual, student‑run celebration, traditionally a bustling night of bar hopping for UW–Oshkosh students, saw noticeably lighter foot traffic and fewer rowdy incidents, according to local residents and business owners.

Ordinance Details and Enforcement

The ordinance, approved by the Oshkosh City Council earlier this year, imposes a $263 fine for violations such as loud music, overcrowded venues and illegal alcohol consumption by minors. City officials say the measure is intended to protect neighborhoods, preserve public safety and give families a quieter environment on weekend evenings.

Students Notice the Change

“A little bit shocking,” said Landon Farley, a senior at UW–Oshkosh, who has attended the crawl for four years. “The streets were a ghost town and there were drones out watching us.” The presence of police‑operated drones was a new element of the event, intended to monitor crowd size and enforce the ordinance.

Resident Reactions

Longtime resident Lori Palmeri told FOX 11, “There were less than half a dozen people on our sidewalk. Normally it would be dozens, small crowds of three to five people every so often. We were very surprised.” Palmeri and other neighbors expressed relief that the ordinance helped keep the downtown area calm and safe for families.

Business Perspective

Isaac Johnson, general manager of Polito’s Pizza, noted that while the crawl is typically the busiest time of year for his establishment, this year saw a slower pace. “Friday was better than Saturday, which we did not expect. Saturday was still good, especially toward the end of the night, but overall it was slower than the last couple of years,” he said. Johnson added, “It gives everyone else a well‑needed rest, which is totally fine. The ordinance did its job to deter rowdy behavior.”

Balancing Fun and Order

Some students felt the new rules were an overcorrection. Farley remarked, “A couple of my friends who live on Scott asked what’s going on, and they said big brother’s watching us with a drone above their house. It’s a little ticky tacky, but it is what it is.” Nonetheless, the majority of voices in the community praised the quieter streets and the sense of order the ordinance provided.

Police Outlook

The Oshkosh Police Department said it will release detailed statistics on pub crawl‑related incidents later this month. Officials anticipate that the ordinance will continue to reduce noise complaints and underage drinking violations in future events.

Looking Ahead

City leaders plan to review the ordinance’s impact after the next crawl cycle and consider adjustments if necessary. For now, the community appears to be enjoying a more peaceful downtown, demonstrating how local governance can balance youthful celebration with the safety and tranquility that families value.
